Mihály Munkácsy

Mihály Munkácsy (1844–1900) was one of the most outstanding Hungarian painters of the 19th century, whose realist and academic-style works made his name known worldwide. After a difficult childhood, he became a carpenter’s apprentice, but his talent for painting was soon recognized, and he studied in Vienna, Munich, and finally Düsseldorf. His first major success came with The Yawning Apprentice (1869), but he gained true international recognition with his monumental historical and biblical paintings, such as Milton (1878) and the Christ Trilogy (Christ Before Pilate, Ecce Homo, Golgotha). He worked in Paris and later in Germany, and his works achieved great success in luxurious salons and exhibitions. Toward the end of his life, he withdrew due to illness and financial difficulties, but his art remains influential in the history of Hungarian and European painting.

Mihály Munkácsy often stayed at Colpach Castle in Luxembourg, which belonged to his wife’s family. There, he could work in a peaceful environment and painted several portraits and landscapes. Colpach served as an inspiring location for him, where friends and art collectors also visited him.
